French Airport Check-In Dialogue and Practice

Situation Overview

You are checking in for a flight at an airport in France or another French-speaking area. You need to find the right counter, give your passport, confirm your destination, answer questions about checked luggage and carry-on bags, ask for a window or aisle seat, understand baggage rules, and receive your boarding pass. Airline staff normally use polite vous forms, and travelers should answer clearly with short, practical phrases.

Grammar in Context

The airport dialogue uses polite vous forms and formal commands: vous voyagez, vous avez, posez la valise, and suivez les panneaux. In French, commands can still be polite when they use the vous imperative and include s'il vous plaît.

For luggage, French uses à enregistrer after the noun: des bagages à enregistrer. This means bags that need to be checked. The checked-bag destination is often expressed with en soute, while carry-on luggage is un bagage cabine.

To talk about seat preferences, use côté plus the location: côté hublot for window and côté couloir for aisle. The pattern also appears in hotels and trains, for example côté cour or côté fenêtre.
