French Asking for Directions Dialogue and Practice
Situation Overview
You are walking in a French-speaking city and need to find a museum, station, pharmacy, or street. You need to get someone's attention politely, ask where a place is, understand directions such as straight ahead, left, right, nearby, and far away, and confirm the route before you leave. With strangers, French speakers normally use polite vous forms and short courtesy phrases like excusez-moi and s'il vous plaît.

Grammar in Context
The directions dialogue uses the polite vous imperative: continuez tout droit, tournez à droite, and prenez cette rue. These are commands grammatically, but with vous they sound appropriate and helpful between strangers.
French uses à with left and right: à gauche, à droite. For landmarks, common location phrases include en face de for across from, derrière for behind, devant for in front of, and près de for near.
To say how long walking takes, use c'est à...: C'est à cinq minutes à pied or C'est à dix minutes à pied environ. The phrase describes travel time, not exact distance.
