Situation Overview

You are starting a friendly conversation in French with someone you have just met or do not know well. This might happen at a class, a neighborhood event, a conference break, a shared table, or while waiting before an appointment. The goal is to greet the person, introduce yourself, ask light questions, respond naturally, and end the conversation politely. In many first-meeting situations, French speakers use vous at first, then may switch to tu if the setting feels relaxed or if someone suggests it.

Grammar in Context

The dialogue shows how French small talk can move from vous to tu. At first, Julie asks C'est la première fois que vous venez ? and Malik says Vous connaissez déjà beaucoup de monde ici ? because they do not know each other yet. Later Julie asks On peut se tutoyer ?, which means they can use informal tu forms if both people agree.

After the switch, the verbs and pronouns change: vous venez becomes tu viens, vous connaissez becomes tu connais, and Et vous ? becomes Et toi ?. The switch is social as much as grammatical, so it is safer to start with vous when speaking to an adult you have just met.

The phrase avoir l'air + adjective means to seem or to look: l'ambiance a l'air détendue. You can use it for small-talk impressions: ce groupe a l'air sympa, le programme a l'air intéressant, or le quartier a l'air calme.
