Portuguese Asking for Directions Dialogue and Practice
Situation Overview
You are walking in a city center and need to find a museum, a subway station, and a bus stop. You will stop someone politely, ask where a place is, understand directions like go straight and turn left, confirm whether it is close, and ask for help again if you miss a street. The dialogue uses everyday Brazilian Portuguese. In Portugal, you may hear metro for subway and autocarro instead of ônibus for bus.

Grammar in Context
The directions dialogue uses ficar to mean where something is located: Onde fica o Museu Municipal?, Fica a uns dez minutos a pé, and Ele fica ao lado da farmácia. This is more natural for places than translating English is with only ser or estar.
For route instructions, Portuguese often uses polite imperative forms that match você: siga, vire, atravesse, and pegue. They sound like helpful instructions, especially when combined with clear landmarks: Siga em frente até o semáforo and pegue a segunda rua à direita.
Notice the contractions with location phrases: à esquerda, à direita, ao lado de, and em frente ao correio. These small words carry direction and position, so practicing them as chunks is more useful than translating word by word.
